Progressive Trance has a structure thats similar to Progressive House, but it has melody, which Progressive House does not have.

Hard Trance has a structure and beat which is similar to Hardstyle, but yet again, it has a melody which Hardstyle does not have.

Melodic Trance\Uplifting Trance\Epic Trance
All share the same priniciple of a central melody which builds up to the middle of the track and cycles itslef 2 times...

not necessarily. you'll find out subgenres are a LOT more complicated than what they may seem.

suggestions:

prog trance: james holden, leama & moor, bart van wissen

uplifting/epic/melodic: armin van buuren, fire & ice, gouryella

hard trance: S.H.O.K.K., alphazone, tankis & savietto

get some tunes by these artists and you'll notice the diference

takes a while to be able to understand the differences. Even some experts like myself...find that some music is crossing genres and you cannot tell the difference. Like progressive house and progressive trance are crossing barriers and some tunes you simply cannot tell the difference. I think it just takes listening to music and eventually you gain the understanding to tell the differences more easily between genres.

Are these rules? NO... If u like it, listen to it, if you dont like, dont... as to genres, well we could sub this genre and sub that genre, there is so many now its hard to place anything!
I like alot of genres, uplifting trance, prog trance, hard trance, hard house, chillout (the list goes on)..
If your not sure, just listen to what you like and leave the rest upto the experts (like i do)
Keep those wicked tunes coming

Genres expand it seems just about every year and music gets more complicated with people trying to pigeonhole a genre. As the person above said...listen to what you like and forget about the genre.

I just gave you the basics, there are some tunes
say like Marc O Tool - Logical, or Morel - Funny Car [Pappa And Gilbey Remix] that has elements from both house and trance and I for one cannot tell the difference between them so I really dont know how to define them...
