Scratching question

Hi, im kinda new to the whole djing thing but have a question about scratching. I use cd players (cdn-88 and cdj-1000) and am wondering what is a good sample to scratch. Should they be a beat, loop, an actual song or what. I am very confused about the whole scratching deal and welp would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
