i'm running win2k pro on both pcs, one of them has two lans with ICS enabled...

the problem is that the client cannot access the net - file sharing works and both pcs see each other in network neighbourhood, but if i ping the client from the host and vice versa i get a timeout error on all 4 pings. the router pc can access the net fine, it's the client that doesn't see the internet.

i'm using a crossover cable to connect the client to the host and i think that might be my problem - any help?

maybe they are not in the same ip subnet? ex, the ICS computer has 192.168.0.1 and the other one has 192.168.1.12, change the other one to 192.168.0.12 and maybe that will work...

the ICS ip is 192.168.0.1

the client ip is 192.168.0.108


both run zonealarm pro, but even if i turn it off on both, nothing works. i'd be glad to use winroute, but is the built-in firewall as good as zonealarm? plus it's really expensive and i don't feel like searching for a crack ... i read on the newsgroups that many people with win2k pro have this problem... not in 98... yet another way microshit screws us?

how does the internet go into the host computer?

is it ASDL/cable modem -> ethernet1 on host, then on ethernet2 on host to (via crossover)ethernet 1 on client?

everything is exactly like you said, only instead of an ASDL/Cable modem i'm plugged into a wall jack at uni - could that be a problem?



i thought that when you use a box as a router, the clients send requests to the router, which in turn sends requests to the site, gets the stuff and routs it back to the client. is that so?

The Microsoft's ICS is a nice idea, but it simply didn't work for me even though I did everything by book, so I had to install WinGate back then. Now I'm just using hardware router.

double check ethernet 1 and ethernet 2 on the host pc are NOT defined as a network bridge (doubt that will be the case though)

otherwise contact the uni tech support and ask them, if they go on about havin 2 pc's just say ones a mates laptop and you want to back up files on the main pc!

double check both etherner cards on the host pc have the right drivers etc as well

Do you have the same subnet mask? 255.255.255.0 on both?

all right, i installed wingate but it doesn't work


the problem is that both pcs see each other on the LAN and i can access files, BUT they don't reply to pings... and what's even more baffling, is that the server accesses the internet absolutely fine, YET pinging websites gives me a timeout request... ARGH, why can't the pcs reply to tcp/ip pings????

When I was in college they gave us a 4 port hub for the room if we had more than one computer hooked up (each roomate having one). There were several guys who had more than one computer each. One guy even got an 8 port hub from the res hall cause he and his roomate each had 3 PCs.

I don't know what their policy is where you are about number of computers but I would guess the net support guy there is probably the easiest way to go since he/she/it can troubleshoot from both ends.

all right, thanks guys, i think i'm gonna get a hub, it'll save me lots of pain. hope it works though, because the main router or whatever they have here assigns my computer name to my account name, so if i wanna connect another computer to the net, i'd have to restart it... but whatever, we'll see what happens. thanks for your help.
