Should I go with Monitors or a PA for my setup?

Hey All -

So here's the deal, I have a solid setup at home:

2 1200s
2 CDJ 100s
Pioner DJM 3000 Mixer

But my speakers are horrible, they are part of a Magnavox shelf system that I got 8 years ago, lol. So its finally time for me to step it up.

I am looking at two options, both which are completley different.

1 - Buy good studio monitors for use in my setup at home
2 - Buy larger more "PA" style speakers for home use and that I can take on the road.

For Monitors, I have been looking at the Event 20/20 Bas setup as well as the 6" and 8" Mackie's. Any ideas or recommendations here? I'm not doing any production work yet, just spinning right now.

The second option leads me toward Mackie SRM450s or The JBL EON 15 G2s or something along those lines. They would be in my home studio 90% of the time I am worried they will be too much sound. I live in a townhome so have neighbors close by and can't crank it up too loud. Would these be OK at low volume levels? The nice thing is I could take them on the go and throw more parties etc. if I had something like this.

Anyway, I'm stuck in the middle and any advise would be great. Read lots of reviews and other threads that I could but I was wondering if anyone had any specific suggestions for me -

Hmm

Well I guess it depends where your stuff is at. If you are a bedroom Dj then you should just some Monitors. If you intend to Dj somewhere I would just get some Pa speakers.

go w/ monitors all the way bro.. when i was buying that kinda shit awhile back, i figured i'd just get the big speakers cuz i figured i'd be using them for gigs and shit.. but nope, didn't happen, most of the time i was too lazy to grab my gear and i didn't want to provide the system for the whole night so u try to get other dj's to provide the sound system.. and for clubs you don't need to provide shit.. and as you said, 90% of the time ur stuff is at home, so go w/ good clean sound quality, not ultra loud shit that doesn't sound good unless u crank it up.. buying my speakers and powerful amp was a waste of money, i shoulda just bought a good amp and monitors, or even powered monitors for that matter.. any good home studio has monitors.. so get monitors!!

Last month I was trying to decide the same thing. I was trying to decide between Behringer Truths or Mackie Srm450's..

Then I ran into a great deal on some new Mackie SRM450's, so I decided if they were too much I could pick up the Truths for only a few $100 more. After getting the Mackies I decided I don't need the truths. They are fine at lower levels. However their true beauty is revealed when they are turned up high.

I wasn't sure I'd use the PA side of the Mackies but after only owning them for a few weeks I've already been asked to come to my friend's party next Saturday and DJ for the night.

The only downside is you don't live in a house and these things can get LOUD and I got addicted and wanted to play them loud all the time, so it's up to you in the end. I chose to have the versatility of the Mackie 450's just in case I needed the ability to play outside or for house parties.

If your just gonna DJ at home, get monitors, no need for a PA if your always inside.

If your gonna be a mobile DJ than I would suggest both, so that you could practice at home (monitors) and take your stuff on the road and drop it like its hot (PA).
