You could pickup the Shure m447 carts...I've heard they're ok for both jobs. I got a pair of Shure SC35C carts b/c they do everything as well. They're not the highest model, but they are pretty good for wht I have to do. Just make sure the stylii are elliptical... that's supposed to preserve your vinyls longer. I don't know much about speakers, but you will definitely want an amp... for the time being you may even want to use a home stereo amplifier/reveiver. I'm gonna hookup my second one very soon

I read an article a little while back posted by a company that wasn't affiliated with cartridge/needle manufacturers that ran a huge number of specialized tests on different types of needles.

The result was that there is no difference in record wear between spherical and elliptical needles, it's all just a myth. I'll see if I can dig it up.

if youre going to scratch... at all, don't even bother with elliptical needles the extra record wear (which should logically be there if you just saw what the stylus tip looks like on the grooves), maybe its as twilo says and theres nothing but regardless the main differences between the spherical and elliptical is the sound quality is slightly better on an elliptical needle but the tracking isn't as good. Elliptical needles jump out much more easily if you "handle" the record. I'd advise against them unless you're going pure mixing with no vinyl manipulation.
Seeing as how you've got a pmc-05 im guessing you're going to scratch some.
