Question What will all these famous DJ's do when they get older??

That's the question that I sometimes ask myself. Let's face it, no matter how you look at it raves are associated with youth. Paul Oakenfold once said, "I don't picture myself DJ'ing when I'm 50 years old... It'll be a brave step, but I'll have to step aside."

Besides the physiological factors (like having moderate to severe hearing loss after many years of DJ'ing, which may or may not happen to certain DJ's), I'm sure the DJ's themselves have given this some thought too. I'm sure Tiesto has, for example. Most famous DJ's right now are in their 30s.

There will come a day when these DJ's will no longer be able to relate to their audience, the clubgoers, most of whom are relatively young. A pessimistic outlook, but there's some truth to it. What do you think?

they just buy a villa in ibiza out in the countryside and chill for the rest of their lives. anyway yeah i agree, there is an exception with some djs (can't name any off the top of my head) but most will become more distant from what makes the clubbers tick as they get older and will have to step aside for younger, more in-touch djs.

I doubt it...
Plus, do most of them have families?
Seems to me they rarely, if ever, settle down... But if they don't then it'll be harder for them in their post-DJ lives...

*imagines a grey-haired ex-DJ in his 50's packing groceries*

i don't see why not? if i had that much money and i'd been workin hard djing, producing, etc.. i'd love to just chill in the sun for the rest of my life. obviously stay in the scene, own a couple of clubs or something, but nothing too demanding

I've always wondered this too. Will Oakey spin at his 40th birthday party? Will most DJs continue to produce music even after they stop DJ'ing? They will surely have to step aside at some time and I bet a few of them actually do have permanent ear damage. The day when Oakey retires will definitely be a sad day for trance fans.

Talking

You could do like my 'boss' does now... become a manager or board executive of a chain of clubs. Makes a load of cash! Just has to sit back and make decisions of what he wants done around and about and...*pling!*...the club managers do the rest...

Wonder how much those high-up string-pullers in Gatecrasher and Privelege make a year...?

Anywayz, you gotta have experience from a lifetime in the business. This bloke who is my supreme boss is, not surprisingly, a British guy who started playing in the Hippodrome in London (I believe before it was called that) and went on to Ministry.... he's now over 40, and owns half the clubs in two cities!

'Course, if I had a choice, I might consider myself being sold to one of those big companies like Pioneer, Yamaha, Technics, Sony, Sennheiser, or some other company, working as a consultant\innovator. (Taken studio engineering now, and music is my life, so...)

Very interesting.
I wish I could talk to you about music-recording, equipment and all the rest, I have lots of questions about that.
