How diversified is the media where you live? (US only)

Just found this investigative journalism site that has documented the media ownership by each city/area code in the US. See how diversified the media in your area is:

http://www.openairwaves.org/telecom...is/default.aspx

DC isn't as bad as I thought it would be ... Viacom and Clear Channel only own 25% of the radio market. Independant stations compose of 32% of the radio market.

But has anyone seen how much John Kerry is worth??? HOLY SHIT!

http://www.bop2004.org/dtaweb/bop2004/

Edit: it would be interesting to do cross comparisons of media ownership in the US with various nations in Europe.

I just checked out San Antonio - home of Clear Channel, and they actually control only 12.5% of the market, less then DC (fancy that).

Cox cable owns 15.58% and Univision another 12.5%.

As for my city Austin is well diversed (Damn hippies!):

Clear Channel owns 15.4% (6 stations)
Viacom at 10.26% (4 stations)

and my university at thrid;
The University of Texas at Austin - 5.13% (2 stations)

Educational is - 20.51% (8 stations)
Independent/Other - 38.5% (15 stations)

Clear Channel owns the 3 most popular music stations, two of which people always argue which is better. my answer to them is always... does it matter, both are owned by clear channel, STFU Disney owns the top two news/talk stations, one of them has been #1 for the past 25 years in its market, something howard stern, oreilly, michael "savage" weiner or any station has ever done

Greater Media, Inc. - 6 stations - 5.41% share
Viacom - 6 stations - 5.41%
Clear Channel - 5 stations - 4.5%
Educational - 35 stations - 31.53%
Other/Independent - 41 statins - 36&

this is from Brooklyn, NY.

very curious stats, considering the homogeneity of radio playlists and popular thought among the cognoscenti; a reminder that statistics themselves reveal nothing absent of context.

Ultimately demand dictates supply in this case.

lol - i disagree strongly that demand dictates supply in almost any case, but we can save that lengthy argument for another day and another thread.

Very well, let me just add that we are a very very small minority in this case haha.

WOW! This is surprising how diverse the radio ownership is in Chicago:

There are a lot of stations here though....109.

Holy SHIT! You sure they aren't off by a factor of 10? I knew Kerry was rich (100 mil or so) but $800 million? Wow.
