Sequencing question

When constructing leads, pads and melodies for use in your track which is the best way to produce them

#1 use your sampler and sample your sounds?
#2 use your envelope generators to produce pattern type patches
#3 or play everything live via a controller and tweak it further in the sequencer?

or use all of the above? a lot of songs you hear today use a little of both I just would like to know what do most of producers do when they produce trance style leads and melodies?

i know this isn't the answer you wanted but all of them are good ways to make sounds. if you are just starting out however i would suggest using samples the most just so you can have good sounds...but definitely play with the generators and learn how to make you own.

I do this one. I find it gives me more freedom with what events change the sequence as it runs through the song. I make new patterns in my sequencer, as required, but at any time can change events/setting to any knob or synth as things go. The sampling one is something I do too, but only when dealing with un-synthesizable sounds, that I just want to incorporate, but not manipulate so much... maybe I'd run the sample through a filter or synth line.
