When one looks back over the last eight years of dance culture, of being privileged enough to travel all over the world with the self-appointed brief of promoting electronic culture to new territories and often unwilling mainstream media, one thing has always been constant, 'Penetrate Deeper' is always there to remind me of why I fell in love with this music.
Washington's Deep Dish are pioneers who were one of the first to perfectly encapsulate the divine beauty of house music within the confines of a compilation that was both technically and musically impeccable. 'Penetrate Deeper', originally released on Tribal in 1995, still sounds fresh with every listen. I can think of sunrises in Ibiza, sunsets in Punta del Este, and their incredible performance at Warsaw in Miami during WMC in 1996, moments all made perfect by
'Penetrate Deeper'.
That night in Warsaw, now Jerry's Famous Deli, was the first time Europeans witnessed the act that had changed our musical lives. It was a defining moment. To this day, 'Penetrate Deeper' still woos new listeners with its hi-hat driven house, sublime, sensory synths and seductive vocal treatments. And still to this day people refuse to believe it was made in 1995. Well, eight years on from it being Muzik Magazine's first ever Compilation of the Year, this landmark release is given a fresh lease of life with this newly mastered collector's package. The rights became available and some of the key titles have been re-recorded, mostly those that were initially eleased on the defunct Tribal imprint.
Ali 'Dubfire' Shirazinia and Sharam Tayebi have one on to release other classic compilations, ost notably the stunning Global Underground Moscow' triumph - voted Compilation of the Year DanceStar USA in 2002. The boys have remixed ustin Timberlake and Janet Jackson, won a Grammy or their rework of Dido, resulting in 2003 with
their now famous hook-up with P Diddy & Kelis here the boys were recruited as co-producers on a landmark release which should open the floodgates for dance music in America.
Deep Dish's grip on the dance scene is further tightened by their annual marathon set at Space in Miami now proving to be as much of a focal point for the Winter Music Conference as the legendary event hosted by Danny Tenaglia. In 2003, Deep Dish stole WMC!
All in all, when one looks back and forward, 'Penetrate Deeper' will forever remain a pivotal moment in dance music. In the words of Dido, 'I Thank You'.
