Did R. Limbaugh Ever Belong in Sports Commentary?

Today I'd like to ask your opinion on the outing of Rush Limbaugh from ESPN. Actually, I guess he ousted himself. Well, to keep this in the political context, I'd like to ask your opinions on some of the questions I've heard on sports radio shows this morning:

1. Did ESPN really know what they were doing when hiring Limbaugh on as a commentator?

2. Was his comment racially motivated?

3. Does Rush know a lick about football?

4. Should politics and sports ever mix again in the future?

5. Did Rush have other motivations (i.e. ratings for his own show) when making controversal comments like this one?

6. Was Rush right about McNabb?

7. Should Rush ever explore sports ever again?

I personally feel Rush wasn't racially motivated here. As much as I absolutely despise the man, I don't see him as a racist in this particular situation. I DO see him, however, as an idiot talking out his ass, and he should have never been involved in sports commentary. His strengths are politics (as the liberals snicker), and his commentary on sports was no better than an avid sports fan.

I can't hold ESPN too responsible for this, because they could never know what someone would say. But I guess they should have known better than to hire an avid sports fan in there with no sports credentials and no experience outside of watching football on TV.

And no, I personally don't think Rush was correct about McNabb - a 3-time Pro Bowler and a quarterback that led his team to 2 NFC Championship games. That's not an overrated player - that's a gifted player utilizing his talents and leadership to carry a team on his back.

Any other opinions?

And no I don't think his comments were racially motivated.

I dunno how credible the NY daily news is but I first heard of the story on howard stern this morning (shamelessly admitting it). I hope it's true ... I think something like that would make me gleefully giggle like a little girl.

hey occrider, Limbaugh simply belongs on your list of political jackasses. Rush may not have been racist in his comment but said what was in his heart and head about a black quarterback. I thought society had evolved passed a discussion about whether a quarterback is black or white. Either you are a good quarterback or not, after all there are many terrible white quarterbacks out there as well as great ones, unbelievable this discussion was even brought up on ESPN.

rush has always been a racist, also its typical of right wing talk hosts to act and think this way, another example is michael weiner. hopefully oreilly or hannity are next off the air

He may be off ESPN, but don't think for a second his radio show will be off the air anytime soon. If anything, this only boosted his radio ratings, at least in the short term. Clear Channel certainly won't get rid of their infamous mouthpiece. If they refuse to get rid of Savage after all that crap he said about homosexuals which ultimately got him kicked off of MSNBC, what makes you think they would get rid of Rush for what he said? Keep in mind Rush has been around a great deal longer as well.

Besides, I still don't think what he said was racially motivated (though the point of him being a racist remains to be seen). To me it seems that he was simply trying to tie in his political crusade against the "liberal" media (har har) with his favorite hobby, pill popping.

Oops! I meant NFL!

He made an outlandish shortsighted statement, and I don't think the race card should have been played against him here. At least not in this particular instance.

LOL...it's nice to see that one of their credible sources is the cover of the National Enquirer. Nice.

Rush's statement was stupid....but I almost think it's got some truths in it...not necessarily in this specific case, but that the media likes to hype shit up. The media is very good at making bad things look worse, and good things look great (or more often undermines good things by finding miniscule bad things and bash away at them)

I mean look at the after effects of this...every media outlet is covering this story...front page in some cases and it's over a sports commentary statement made by a notorious big mouth...big deal.

I don't think he should have ever been in the sports biz, but this won't effect his political show status...in fact you are right it may boost them in the short term.

Mega Dittos or whatever they say.

basicly he said that the media has overrated McNabb because they want to see a black quarterback succeed.

He essentially suggested that Donovan McNabb-quarterback of the Eagles, receives less criticism because he is black and the media wants to see a black QB succeed. I would ask Rush Limbaugh if he ever heard of Warren Moon(retired), Steve McNair, Dante Culpepper, Kordell Stewart. All black QBs who are there because they are quarterbacks, not because they are black if they can't play they shouldn't be there, black or white. I just found his comment stupid and suggestive that McNabb is first a black quarterback, then an NFL qaurterback. I thought QBs were QBs.
