Confused 303's

Can someone out there please explain to me what 303's are. I had a friend try to explain it to me, and he failed miserably. All I could really understand was pattern and synth's. But I mean shit, that's trance. haha

Any help would be appreciated, I know it's stupid ass question.

Jon

The Roland TB-303 is what all the 303's refer to. It was brought out somewhere in the 80's i think and the TB (Transistor Bassline) was supposed to simulate a bassguitar. It sucked ass at this, so all the "band" musicians got rid of their TB for like $25, which allowed techno pioneers, having no dough and all becuz techno wasn't anything yet, to pick up one of these. The 303 was pretty much used in every techno song in the beginning days and it still is used throughout electronic music alot now. If you know what it sounds like you'll recognise it alot in songs (remember for example that Blade soundtrack line; Operation blade; phat bass n stuff; that's a distorted 303) tho it can sound very different becuz it has so many parameter pots. Becuz they were actually failing at doing what they were intended for; imitating a bass player, they haven't been in production very long which results in there being only so much of them around. Nowadays these things cost a lot more than they did when released. Unfortunately! I want a 303 too! Still software Rebirth comes close to the actual thing.

Thanx, great explanation. I knew exactly what you were talking about when you used the blade soundtrack example. That imitation bass sound that sounds like it's coming through a tube or something. Sometimes I like those, most of the time they get on my nerves.

Thanks a lot tho, makes so much sense now. heh
