Video Editing

Can anyone recommend me to any software/websites dealing with video editing? I'd just like to experiment with various levels of multimedia production and i think video editing would be a good start. Just anyone with any tips/tricks would be helpful.
How much horsepower do i need to run video editing programs? I'm thinking about getting Adobe Premeire. I haven't looked at the price, but coming from Adobe, i think selling my kidneys would pay for the packaging.

imovie & finalcut are sweet on the mac

either way u'll need 2 fast hardrives, decent processor, 512 ram, and firewire card. oh 2 monitor setup if ur serious.

Why two HDD? One of the new WD Raptor 72GB drives should suffice. Not as fast as a RAID setup, but it's fast enough afaik. It's coming out in November I think.

the more HDDs the better, it allows the video program to do multiple writing simultanously, 1st drive running ur os and video application, 2nd drive rendering video, 3rd drive rendering audio, etc...

I am actually using Adobe Premiere Pro (7.0) with Pinnacle Hollywood FX and Photoshop 7.0 for some matte.

My setup is:
Windows XP SP1
1 Gig DDR400 dual channel
P4 2.8 with HT with an i875 chipset
system files are on a 20gigs drive RAID mirroring 7200 rpm
video files are on a 80 Gigs drive 7200 rpm
third 80 gigs drive 7200 rpm serve for swapping
firewire / usb 2.0
Ati 9600 Pro 128Ram (can be useful with some opengl animations in realtime)

I am now very very happy with Premiere Pro, its light years away from crappy premiere 6.5 who kept crashing and crashing (i changed 3 times my computer specs to optimize things)

Premiere pro is a bit complicated tho, but manageable.

I also have after effects 6.0 but its waaaay to complicated for my own taste... the craziest stuff can be done with it.

i haven't really messed with Premiere. I downloaded it awhile ago and messed around a bit.

What i use (well used i haven't done any movie editing in a while) was Final Cut Pro. was an absolutly awsome program. i loved it alot.

if your willing to spend some money and get a mac, i highly suggest it.
