So How Do Studios Work

i have been using virtual instruments for some time and am ready to buy my studio peice by peice.

how do they work?

how do you record sounds from synthesizers into the sequencer? also...how do u add hard compression effects....e.g. if u have 1 hardware compressor can you use them on all? like sample the compressed sound and add it in? then u can do this for every layer and then to the master mixdown?

heres is a very brief overview of how you get started in the hardware game. You will use your computer to sequence everything via MIDI, much like you are doing with your softsynths. You will need a MIDI interface to make your synths/drum machines etc. communicate with your computer. All of your synths audio outs need to go to a mixer or a souncard. If you go with a mixing console you will be able to insert your effects on each channel such as compression like you stated.Given you will need an outboard effects box and an multichannel or single channel outboard compressor to do this. You will also be able to adjust volume/gain,panning,EQ and effect sends for each channel with a mixer.Ultimately you want all of your synths "sound" to get into the computer weather they go through a mixer first is up to you.Mixers are ideal if you have multiple pieces of gear.Alot of people couldnt work without mixers but these days they arent a nessecity. You can get a soundcard with multiple inputs and if you only have a synth and a drum machine then you only need 4-8 inputs anyway. Its up to you.Once all you MIDI has been recorded to audio then you can manipulte it like you would normaly.I am too tired to continue and not about to just delete what I started writing so if you have any questions just ask. This should give you a basic overview of what it takes to set up a studio.
