Newb question

Alright I'm on day 2 of dj'ing, and right now im just practicing mixing the same track into each other. If i know the cued track is faster (when i press it late), i just gradually slow it down until it matches. Not a problem.

But often I don't know which track is faster. How do you tell? Also, do you use your foot or finger to help along with the beat of the speakers?

Roosh

Yo, speed the incoming song up and see if the beats gallop more, if they do, you were already too fast... if you increase speed and the beats gallop less, then you are getting closer to matching the BPM. Tap your foot, tap your finger, tap your ass to da muziq.

i second that. i've beeng djing for alittle over two years and i still have problems hearing which song is faster/ slower once in a while. i usually make an educated guess and tap a pitch bend button, if it sounds better, than i was right.
btw congrats on taking up djing, try not to get too frustrated. my advice would be to always practice using songs that you really like so that even if things arent going your way, your still rocking out to your favorite tunes

if im sitting down i use my feet to measure the beat or sometiomes my head. if im standing i use my head.

it just takes time for ur ears/brain to get used to separating the sounds and seeing which one is ahead/behind ... if it feels like ur not progressing, you actually are progressing since the more u listen/try to beatmatch, u're brain will get used to it .. so yeah .. dont get frustrated .. just take a break and keep goin :P

i had a beat counter mixer and have had some problems beatmatching..3 weeks ago i got my 4 channel mixer that has no beat counter...trust me, i learned how to do it by ear real quick! just keep at it for hours at a time...rather than do 30 minutes per day, its better to do 3 1/2 hours on one day...thats my opinion..keep at it

oh and to get better, sometimes i play a game. how fast can you beatmatch...i just grab in the record pile and toss a record on there and see if i can match beats as fast as possible...i dont care if the phrases match or the bars match as long as the beats match...its helped me get quick at it...once you have the beatmatched...find your cue point and you are set

when i first learned to beatmatch i mixed the same 2 tracks together, and the funny thing was i didnt know it was called beatmatching, all i was doin is keeping the pitch same on both decks. later i tried mixing two different tracks with matching bpm's and it started to get in my head that ok this is how to beatmix.

if your mixer has a split option use that, its better to beat match using two different tunes (one in each ear) than combining them. if your mixer does not have a split function, put one tune in your headphones then take off one cup and listen to the other tune through your speakers.
