Mark Oliver and AnniversaryParties

Great party at guv this weekend.

I have a beef though. The last 2 Anniversary parties at guv had a guest dj. Ya sure these dj's are always a welcomed performance, but in my opinion MO got robbed of the spotlight that he so fittingly deserves.

Every year there are or were at least 2 parties that really captured the evolution of Spin Saturdays and they were the anniversary party and new years eve party. In 9+ hours Mark would really take you back into the golden days of trance. Binary Finary, Gouryella, Push, end of time, solar stone etc, etc, etc right up to the most current. Guv is what it is today because of his sets.

My hope is that next year (if im still partying) that we have MO spin so we can party Spin Saturday style rather than with a bloke dj who hides behind security staff and takes off before the night is over. Its what an Anniversary party is suppose to represent.

Thoughts??

On a side note:

Oakenfold is coming back very soon. Fukn right!!!!

i see what you are saying, but i think that due to the fact that the anniversary is close to canadian thanksgiving (a day ppl in other countries have to work) it likely presents a good opportunity to bring in a big name. i don't think bringing in a big name DJ that we don't get to see very often is a slam against mark. Spin is about having a wicked resident DJ that keeps it fresh every week and bringing in international talent as well. perhaps keeping the saturday of the anniversary weekend a MO night and making the sunday a night w/ guest would be a good alternative. I imagibe ther will be many nights to enjoy mark on his own, due to the removal of tobacco sponorship in teh near future anyway.

Very true... Just wait for the booze sponsors to pick it up.... sooner (hopefully) than later.

My opinion - Mark O is awesome. Talk about friggin' versitile - this guy can play any room, anytime and be amazing. There are not many people that can pull that off.

I think Charles is damn lucky to have a resident like Mark O - that regardless of the European headliner - the resident (Mark O) can fit right in and make the night awesome (doing open AND close) - all the while still pulling off 8 hour sets that pack the house.

Kudos to Mark O.

Very good point. Come to think of it - Mark O and dekozee are the only two DJs I've ever seen walking around the club after playing - chatting with the crowd on a frequent basis.

But I can understand the european uber-DJ not wanting to get torn to shreds (becuase they only come once every 2 years and what not).

I see your point about giving Mark the spotlight. But honestly, i think he did on Sunday even with PVD and Deep Dish being there. The Kool Haus was the place to be that night, and MO warmed up the crowd for the main act, and followed up with an even better closing set to bring the night to an end. Im a huge Deep Dish fan, and even with them in the other room, i couldnt help myself from going back to the Kool Haus to hear what Mark was gonna drop next.

Agreed. Sunday night can be whatever. Even on saturday have an event in the KoolHaus but Saturday should be a true spin saturday.

I understand what's being said too...and I agree to some extent. A full night of Mark draws zero complaints from me

Regardless of who else comes, I think MO certainly makes sure we all don't forget who runs the show here This past weekend was no exception.

I wonder whether or not HE enjoys having guests for anniversary events...what if he asked for the night for himself alone...would it happen? Does he have a lot of input into who comes and when? Just curious...

No one who attended either night (or both, in my case, ugh) could forget for a minute that MO was *sharing* the stage with peers, not merely "opening" for them. He's made a conscious choice to make Guv his home rather than tour all over the place and we're all the more fortunate (and appreciative, I hope) for that!

BTW...isn't it Heineken that will be stepping up to help fill the cig sponsor void in the party scene here?

i think people are overlooking the fact that Mark rocks the Guv week in and week out every Saturday night, and NO ONE is bored of his sets. he STILL packs the club, and people still go to see HIM.

that being said, the Guv could easily rock these parties and leave Mark off the lineup, for the lone reason that he's already there alone 35 nights each year. but he IS on the card, because it's quite obvious that we'll never get enough of him.

and Mark has chosen his place...instead of touring different cities all year long, he continues to blow us away, spinning in front of a crowd that has endless love for him. i'm not sure that he feels neglected, nor do most of his fans.

It was fun as hell to have armin and pvd here this wknd...super wknd...but yea itll be interesting...to see if they do mark 9 hours on sat...and throw all the guest djs on sunday with mark spinning maybe an opening in either the KH or the main room..stead of closing it like he did on sunday....

am i makin sense?

Mark definitely rocks. He is EDM's best kept secret! Toronto is blessed to have him for itself Makes me wonder when I'm going to see a Global Underground - Mark Oliver CD

This is not a rip in any way. When you are a great generalist, your skills can be easily ignored. If you think about the uber dj's each of them have a distinctive sound that set's them apart. I'd really be interested in hearing what the Mark Oliver Sound is like.

marks real good, everytime i hear that guy spin, its crazy, cuz he'll play songs like benny bengassi, and slide, and its crazy how he doesnt stick to one genre in a set, he doesnt get the respect he deserves for sure,
