Philosophical question

When you cook frozen dinners in the microwave and they say you have to set it for 10 minutes at half-power, why not cook it for 5 minutes at full power?

Because the food will receive too much microwave radiation all at once and will likely be burned on top/around the edges, and perhaps not cooked fully all the way through.

When it's on a medium power, the microwave turns on and off it's radiation periodically, as opposed to simply having less microwaves all at once. This gives it a more thorough cooking job, and a tastier meal for you, the consumer.

The End.

I'm not sure but the way microwave radiation works is it excites water molecules in the food which heats them up. usually the rays are focused at the center of the microwave so i suppose if they are too intense the heat doesn't have time to radiate throughout the food thus burning it in certain spots... makes sense to me but IANAP
