get it. Faster, cheaper, and overall better than the PIII

I think the *ONLY* issue might be if you got a motherbaord with an older firmware release and want to use a geeforce card.. but from what I know, the newer firmware releases seem to fix the problems... at least it did for my friend w/a geeforce II and an asus k7v mobo & 800 mhz athlon.

i got an athlon 750 myself... they are great!

I work for AMD so my opinion might be a little slandered. Getting a Gig Athlon is a no brainer, you can buy one for $188 at http://www.compuplus.com, that's CHEAP!!!. I've had my Gig for a couple months now and love it. Just make sure you check out the specs for motherboards and you should be fine. I want everyone who reads this to understand that if it wasn't for AMD, CPU speeds would be half of what they are today and the price would be double or triple because of INTEL...AMD makes faster, cheaper, high quality CPU's. Just wait until we release the sledgehammer!!! Okay no more tech talk from me in the Tranceaddict forum.

Hey my friend has an ahtlon 850 overclocked to 1000 mhz and it runs quite stable
I'd recommend never to even think of purchasing an intel chip... I've made that mistake before :P

BIGkev, what do you do at AMD if you don't mind me asking?

Actually TB's are less stable overclocked then the Duron. You can get the new 850mhz duron for like 110$ (fuckin cheap as hell lol) and a motherboard w/fan for only 211 from Mwave.com. The prices on mwave are insane ....

Duron remains the king of overclocking right now though That and their cheap and fun to play with And yes youll need to buy a new "Slot A" motherboard for it to be compatible with the T-bird/aka/Duron processor chipset.

BIGkev: First, congratulations on working for a fine company. You guys have changed the world of processors, and have my deepest thanks.

Next, as far as the Hammer is concerned, I know redhat has jumped on board, but as of yet, at least as far as I know, M$cr$s$ft hasn't. Do you guys expect to have any difficulty bringing in this new processor without them backing you? Perhaps it's time we got a good windows emulator under linux running.

Definitely go for a T-Bird. Maybe consider a DDR memory board, if you're prepared to wait a month or so. They seem pretty cool & prices are coming down quite a bit already.

Otherwise if you don't want a DDR memory based board, get one of the new boards coming out with the 133MHz Front Side Bus (older ones are 100MHz) & the Athlon which uses the 133MHz FSB. They're using the VIA KT133A chipset (i think that's the right code).

But DON'T do intel, way overpriced for what you're getting.

Also, the hassles with the graphics cards & motherboards are fixed - (I know), I work for Creative Labs. Yep, we seem to have guys working at a couple of the biggies in the PC world. BIGKev - congrats, awesome company, doing great things.

To answer Morbius, my offical title is Wafer Fab Tech Specialist. Basically I oversee production in my area and work with Engineers and Maintenance to insure maxium wafer output (the chips/cpu are made out of silicon wafers if you didn't know). Nothing too glamorous, but it is a fun and exciting job. To answer Aviston, I don't know all the details of sledgehammer yet, I'm not too concerned with MS. If Intel and us make 64bit processors in high volume then MS will have to jump on board with some O/S. But, again I'm not in the info loop, I am more on the production side (volume of devices, speeds, yields). I can tell you that if you think 1.2 gig is fast, just wait. In 2001, the Duron will be the Celeron and PIII killer with low prices and super speeds and large cache. The Palomino, second generation Athlon, will set the speed standard for Q3 and Q4 of 2001. Well, I have probably said too much and now I will get fired. Okay, no more tech talk I get enough at work. Anyone got the advance of Armin Van Buuren 002 yet??? If so will you share???
