I wonder about this, too. Sometimes it seems there are people who seem to enjoy criticizing, putting others down, making others feel stupid or idiotic or ugly or unlikeable...

Sometimes it seems as if they think they are being constructive or helpful. Like really trying to help someone with their comments. Othertimes, it seems only as if they are being destructive and hurtful.

I have to watch myself. I think I say things sometimes...trying to be honest..but actually being hurtful...not meaning to be. I try to be more thoughtful and considerate...to think before I say something. Maybe this is part of growing up. I dunno.

t'is just that i have a friend who's forever slagging people off (today i was his prime target.. i just laughed along as some of the stuff was hilarious - at my expence but it was funny shit)

he's always been like that, even at school, people he considered the "less cool" people of our year, he wouldn't sympathise with them and he wouldn't be shy about telling them what he thought of them.

although this guy in question, i cant think if any reason why he'd be insecure. i guess it's possible he's a heartless **** and just likes to be cheeky

im kinda of an equal opportunity asshole, and I do it because Im emotionless and dont care about anyone, except myself. Basically it all stems from not caring, and thinking that people should care less about shit too.

Cold-hearted and immature. That's just what I equate with people who you described.

I agree, some of it can stem from insecurity, and the need to fit in, but I think most of the time it's just immaturity.
