Simple ... the purpose is to create a vaccine for it or have experience with creating similar vaccines for other like diseases that may undergo genetic engineering in similar situations. Much like how Norton anti-virus creates who knows how many viruses in order to create quick fixes before the damage of a new virus is unleashed, it makes sense to explore the possibile use of genetic engineering to see its potential with current viruses. If this was so "secretive" and actually important, an outside university scientist woudln't be contracted out to research it and you wouldn't be reading about it.

Haha, I realized there was a legitimate purpose, so I cut out my comments! Unfortunately you were typing up the reply in the meanwhile.

Regardless, I find it a little ironic that a country supposedly so against other countries possessing WMD's, would develop something that could potentially be turned into a WMD. I don't think the argument, "We are responsible not to use it unwisely" does not really hold because in the case of WMD (killer viruses, to boot), it is unjustifiable that one would bring into existence a new WMD if one would not use it anyway.

My personal Red Light will start flashing as soon as this virus is found to affect humans.
