Cool how can i add an effect to a sound?

i want to make my own songs but theres one thing iam confused on: If i drag a sound sample onto a sequencer and add an effect to it how can i change the effect so it doesnt last throughout the whole sample, for example if i added a 'flange' effect on a sound sample on cubase how could i start with flange and blend it back to the origional sound?

I haven't used cubase a lot, but I know you can do this with it. I've
used fruityloops and Reason a lot and basically it all comes down to automation. I assume there is a knob in the flange effects settings that will turn the amount of flange up or down (this would apply to almost any plugin effect). In Fruity and Reason, you right click on a knob and you get an option that says somethig like 'edit automation'. Select that and it pulls up something that resembles a graph, where time is the X axis and the knob setting is the Y axis. So basically you draw how you want that knob to adjust as the song progresses. I suggest looking up 'automation' in the manual/help file to figure out how to do this in cubase. You can also record knob movements in real-time, but I prefer drawing the changes so that I get the timing perfect.
