this is a neverending discusion, I personally would stay with pc (yes the os stals but there is more software for pc than for mac, is the comp you are buying just for music production? do you think you would be better with mac?), it all depends on tastes, there is no definate answer to say witch is better so if you think mac will do the job go for mac, if not stay with pc....

PC for sure.

Things are just plain easier.

it will not be used only for production, but the otehr stuff is very minimal (TA, web browsing, and some occasional office applications). production is just something that i want to try out. what i would like to do is be able to make pro sounding stuff with as little cost as possible, but i dont want to be limited. im realy getting sick of PC, i have gone as far as to boycott microsoft and am now running linux, wich is still a bit complicated.

It is possible, I own a G4 laptop(mac). If you plan on producing I suggest getting a G4 Laptop and getting Soundtrack for $200. It is a far better than running any program on a PC and the office shit is all on Mac ( Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc.). As long as you don't want to play games the Mac is the way to go.

I know a producer that use to be on PC's then made the "Switch" and loves the Mac. Not to mention that if you ever get into editing the MAc is the way to go. Anyways Final Scratch runs better on OSX!

Soundtrack is practicaly the same as Acid Pro! And for only $200 it's a steal, or you can drop $1000 on the full Final Cut Pro suite.

i wouldnt go buy a brand new super-computer for something that i just wanna "try out"..if u have a decent pc..just go with that in the beginning..pc wont limit u when producing, many great tracks has been done with pcs

I could write tons on this subject. I design software so I use computers every second. Macs are a little more stable and yeah, people use them for the high end audio/video apps but no way do you need one for making music. Maybe if you were running a big studio to record rock groups or something. Also I don't understand people having so much trouble with win XP. I use visual studio .net, sql server, and all sorts of audio apps all day with no problems at all, I reboot my work machine maybe once every 2 weeks. If I knew what types of problems you were having I could maybe figure out why.

You know I got to ask Ferry all sorts of stuff about producing which was cool since I just put together a little setup myself. When I told him I used Cubase SX on a PC he said, yeah thats what I use! Also on Tiestos DVD he said he uses Cubase. I'd get the midi controller and just start messing around with fruity loops or cubase, but fruity loops is way easier to get up and running, I use it as a VST instrument within cubase for quantinized type stuff, and use cubase to record synths and do the mixing. But I bet if Ferry had fruity loops, some software synths and decent plugins he could get very close to pro quality I'm sure. Composing a good track musically and creating a great sounding production are 2 totally seperate things, I guess the good producers in dance music can do both well.

thanks jeff, i forget you were a programmer, i probably should have asked you first. im getting a new computer either way. but now im thinkin i might just hold off untill the 64 bit processors come down in price, or maybe wait till the g5 powerbook comes out but thanks for the advice everybody!!!

this kind of things should be talked about once in a while... a thread from a year ago isn't gonna help since ther is a new mac and way faster pc's newer software.. ect. you get my point?

i don't have advice on software.. me = n00b to

and yes its posible to make pro tracks with just software and a midi keyboard but it ain't easy (making a good track never is i guess)
