Recommendations please?

Hi all

I'm very new to Trance, in fact electronic music in general, but its grabbed me and I was wondering if some of you might be able to recommend some artists/albums/sets that I could seek out.

The first tunes of any type in any electronic genre I heard was Paul van Dyk's "Out There And Back", I've since come to realise Paul knows his stuff and I haven't found anything to really compare to it, even though he can be a bit hit'n'miss.

In terms of exploration into Trance (which I've worked out is what does it for me), this site has been amazing for me. I have dragged a few livesets down to listen (and from djmixes2k.com as well) just to see what some of the different artists are doing and here's what I've found so far:

Paul van Dyk rocks, his Live @ Energy set is the BEST 70 mins of Trance I've heard bar none. My problem has become that each new thing I listen to I compare to it. For me it has the perfect drive, speed, melody, intensity, its my Trance utopia.

So yeah, now I keep looking for stuff that has the same elements but obviously with some different tracks. We party til the wee hours listening to this on repeat, which doesn't bother us any, but some new stuff would be nice.

So, if I'm looking for a set or an album or an artist or all of the above that matches the style Paul pulled out there, any ideas where I might start? Or is that set just a raw diamond and I should just be happy it got put down once?

Things that have disappointed...Tiesto's "Magik 6", just didn't go anywhere for me. Any of the Ministry Of Sound annuals, blech, so contrived (apologies for any offense there ); the Trancport discs (recommended to me by people saying "a good place to start") seem to lack for me as well. Perhaps I should stay away from studio stuff?

Anyway, on the positive side I like little bits; Safri Duo's "Played-A-Live (The Bongo Song)" (not sure which mix) is amazing. I dig John 00 Fleming's live set up here for some reason, that strikes a chord; I have an Armin van Beuren set that isn't bad and the Ronski Speed set sounds promising though I haven't listened to more than a minute's worth yet. Oh and back on Paul, the Collumbiahalle '02 set is amazing, yet that Ibiza set is too soft for me and the Einsrave (sp?) set isn't bad but the track selection goes a bit away from what I like. His "Politics of Dancing" is a bit too soft too, except for Disc 1 track 1, that's AWSOME. LOL.

So yeah, where might I go to find what I'm looking for? Sorry for the big ass message, hope it didn't put you's to sleep for too long

Cheers and beers

Benno

PvD is one of the most active, influential, and liked DJs in the whole trance area. Others include guys like Tiesto, Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten (collectively known as the big 4).

Surprised that Magik 6 disappointed you... considered by many to be Tiesto's best mix album. Tiesto and PvD have quite different sounds... I can't really say that many of the bigger DJs have similar "sounds". I personally find their styles all unique and interesting to hear. The MoS albums, I always say away from... I'm not much a fan anyhow of their stuff... usually kinda cheesy (ie. commercial money cash cows).

Also realize what works in a club environment is completely different than what works in a car stereo or a home system... that's why livesets are different than mix albums. Mix albums are far more technical and the approach of the mix is the art form. In a liveset, whatever the mood of the crowd and flow is what is tried to be captured, if that makes any sense.

I would suggest just seeing what people have in their "Favorites" and what people talk about and check those tracks out, that's the only way to find out!

Hey Stories, cheers for the reply. I'm with you on the mix albums/sets thing, love the way it all gets put together. Have been keeping an eye on people's favourites for a bit now too and will continue to do so. That's how I got a listen to Armin at least.

For now though, nothing has rivalled that Energy set, cor, sends contraband I took months ago into circulation again, lol. Thanks again for taking the time, appreciate it.

Cheers and beers
