My Family is off to Cape Town today actually.
Em here is why the Flag looks the way it does:
With the fall of Aparthied and the Nationalist government in 1992 many changes had to occur. One of which was to change from the old flag which represented imperial colonialism and aparthied. In 1994 the new flag was developed to incorporate and honour all official ethnic groups within its "rainbow nation".
Some Interpretations on the colour schemes:
Red, white and blue are common in historical flags of South Africa, including colonial flags of Britain and Holland, while green, black and gold were often colours of the African people. The colour combinations of the new flag can be interpreted differently by different people.
Red for bloodshed
Blue of open blue skies
Green for the land
Black for the black people
White for the european people
Yellow for the natural resources ie. Gold
The Y symbolizes the merging nationalities - ie unity
Nicolas Noakes, 11 Feb 2000
The central design of the flag, beginning at the flagpost in a "V" form and flowing into a single horizontal band to the outer edge of the fly, can be interpreted as the convergence of diverse elements within South African society, taking the road ahead in unity.
PS. the flag Jon posted is Wrong there should be no white within the "V"
