Groove Armada, house?

So a friend of mine just bought the Groove Armada CD out of the country into the club or something like that. I was listening to it and really was puzzled as to what this music is classified as. It didn't sound like trance, house, or progressive. What do you classify there music as? Maybe it's something I never even heard of. I know Donald Glaude, he's definately house. Armin of course trance. But they seem to be in the middle as well as John Digweed. Very confused, some guidance please.

groove armada don't produce any one specific style of muscic.

they are very wide ranging, from weird hip hop shit to trance to house. their actually quite good.

True, even though GA isn't trance per se, it is Andy Cato who has done a lot of rather amazing trance tunes under monikers like Big C and Qattara (with Alex Whitcombe).

Groove Armada - Goodbye Country, Hello Nightclub

These guys definitely rule, I love listening to their stuff. Some of it is easier to classify than others.

Lovebox - progressive house, you heard it in G&D's Global DJ Broadcast from 2003.01.06
Easy - funky vocal house
Chicago - very slow house....

But then there are amazing tunes like "At The River" that are very chilled and not danceable, but still amazing.

None of their albums fits into one genre. They're very dynamic and versatile.

When I think of Groove Armada, I think "deep chilled funk jazz house" - I'll let you sort out which parts are which...

It is only Andy Cato from Groove Armada that is Big C.

Well, when you go to the record shop, the records are sorted by genre. So if you want to find similar artists, then you need classifications. I agree with the spirit of your message, but I think there's some value to recognizing genres. You won't find me, however, trying to explain the difference between epic and melodic trance.

Can anyone recommend anything similar to Groove Armada? They seem to be in a category of their own, but I'd love to find others like them.

May as well post an alias list of his.

Big C
Groove Armada (With Tom Findley)
Weekend Players (With vocalist Rachel Foster)
Beat Foundation (With Mike Monday, D. Hewson)
Mothers Pride (With D. Hewson)
Qattara (With Alex Whitcombe)

Was also the owner of the excellent 90's Trance/Progressive House label Skinnymalinky.

And he's 6'8 in height, hence the "Big C".
