It has to be one of the two. When you installed it, it would have (should have) asked you whether you wanted to install the VST and/or DX association.

I think the Pro-53 works as standalone program also.

what do you use it with??
just as a standalone program or in like fruity or something?
the reason i asked about the VST/DX is becaus you can't automate a DXi.... well.. you can automate it in someway using a midiout channel and such... but that's never working for me for some freaking reason :/

i know that for pro-53 you can edit events from teh synths' menu and you can select which knob to automate
The record button only automates the synth in the standalone. When using a sequencer like fruityloops, you need to automate with the fruity wrapper. Also you can assign knobs on your midi controller easily in the standalone, usign the midi learn feature, which again does not work in fruityloops, you need to assign them through the wrapper. Use the menu in the top left corner of the wrapper window, there are options like 'Link to Controller' and 'Edit Events'. A good way to automate is to simply click on an empty pattern and hit the record button, then play and move the knobs, then hit stop. This assigns the events to that pattern and they will occur each time you place the pattern in the playlist. Very nice for cut envelopes and stuff. Anyway, thats pretty much it.
