the producer makes the track, presses a certain amount of copies and distributes them to the DJ a-list (as white labels) for them to listen and if they like it - to play. this is to gain recognition of the track and to increase its popularity. other copies, usually on cd or dat, are sent to the labels so they can fight for a deal.
the other half of the time, its the actual label pressing a few test copies to send out to these DJ's, who in turn provide feedback and crowd response and give the label an idea on if and how many copies should be released.
