Smiley DJ Downfall of Vinyl?

Seen in the latest issue of DJ Magazine:

'Red Jerry, boss of now defunct record label Hooj, warned DJmag earlier this year, that if labels did not embrace the Internet revolution and set-up online stores, they would cease trading. “The future is digital. Anyone who thinks that DJs will still be playing vinyl in five years is crazy” Red Jerry told DJmag. Hooj has since folded, but still operates its music download service.'

Any thoughts on Red Jerry's quote? Does anybody else feel that the soul and spirit of vinyl will fall soon?

Here is the article: http://www.djmag.com/news_detail.asp?id=22

I would say that in coming years, we will see less and less vinyl DJs and more and more CD DJ's. Psytrance is already mostly CD...

So do you think that this will cause a reduction in vinyl production for new releases? Thats what I'd be most worried about. I don't really care how people spin so long as theyre enjoying theirselves. But if it becomes unprofitable for companies to keep selling vinyl, then that would lead to a downfall of a great subculture. You have to admit that there is a major difference in the mystique between vinyl DJ's and CD DJ's.

yikes i dunno... when i saw ferry turning through his CD book a few weeks ago it wasn't very exciting, but when i watched him go into his record bag i was getting all ready for the next big tune... its tough to say i guess, but symbolicly... CD's dont do much for a DJ :/

Also you could figure that if there is an increase in CD spinners, then there is almost undoubtedly an increase in music piracy. When DJ's can just search and download their new releases and burn them instead of going all the way to an unorganized shop, searching for hours for them and buying them. This leads to a further increase in music prices which will be a further deterrent for new DJ's. Good lord, what a horrible cycle. I don't even want to think about what else could happen.

Well, it's true that piracy will increase...but, the thing I don't understand is why companies never bother to release on CD as well as vinyl. Like I said with psytrance, it's mostly CD, but almost everything is also released to purchase on CD. Most of the psytrance companies distributing CD's are doing enough business for themselves to keep operating, as well.

Looking at the bright side of things, it also means any producer can walk up to a DJ and hand them a CD they burned with their track on it, and it's possible for the DJ to immediately play from the CD if they like it. It makes it much easier for the amateur producer to let their tunes get aired. DJ's can also download music from amateur producers and play it. Overall, it makes music more accessible.

Don't you think though that if accessibility turns out to be increased, then it will accelerate the deterioration of the subversion of our culture?
