So here is the review what you can expect from dvd
What comes to mind when I hear the term ‘music DVD’, is something that has a few video clips, maybe a bit of a live performance and yeah.. it’s not really something that I would consider exciting. Especially in the underground electronic world (although it may not be as underground as it used to). But as I put this DVD into my player and it began, the cover assuring me of a non-stop 3+ hour (edited) live session… I knew there was to be some interesting watching ahead...
Set in the Gelredome, Arnhem, Netherlands on May 10 2003, with a sell out crowd of 25,000 punters in one massive arena the DVD starts you right in the middle of the action, with Tiesto warming up the crowd with a few lighter trance tunes before Mavie Marcos of Andain dishes out a live vocal performance of their very catch and rather large tune of 2003, ‘Beautiful Things’, breaks from the building intro and Tiesto get back into it.
Over the 200+ minutes, the DVD also builds visually, alongside Tiesto’s set. As the music gets more pumping the visuals begin to get more detailed, with more of the crowd being lit up and more of the huge array of lighting put through its paces (and don’t forget the massive laser setup). By the end of the set the visuals are just incredible, and you have the full crowd lit up, going nuts in the massive arena in - contrasting the start which was rather dark and held back.
The only problem is that the set does get a little cheesed out with a few periods (mainly the asian style dragon dancing, aussie didgeridoo action, and africanism) that wouldn’t normally have anything to do with what Tiesto would play in a live set, but it does makes for some nice visuals and also helps break up the 3+ hours. Jan Johnston also delivers a live performance of her ‘I Feel Beautiful’ bringing the loved anthem to the crowd.
The production at the and the event is almost most impressive, and they obviously went that next step to really help the DVD stand out as something different, and boy does it work wonders. When Tiesto drops his ‘Flight 643’ and the entire crowd is on their feet, going nuts you really understand why Tiesto has climbed to the pole position he currently resides in and the control he has over possibly millions of clubbers around the world. From there you really get a great feel for what it is like to be in a huge trance arena with Tiesto banging out some uplifting trance with the entire crowd, hands in the air dancing to the music.
It is very impressive to finally see some full-length footage of a live set of the undisputed leader of electronic music as it stands today, Tiesto… is there any stopping the man?! It also features some of the best live video and camera work to date and I honestly can’t think of DVD in the dance market that compares, it is a proper must have for any Tiesto fan and a great xmas gift for your trance obsessed brother.
As an added bonus the DVD comes in a 2-disc set which features over 95 minutes of extra footage, the making of, music videos, tv commercials, Alternate angles and more!
