Question Passport and international travel questons...

How would one go about getting their passport in the US? What steps are involved? How much does it cost?

What steps are involved in travelling to a foreign (to a US citizen) country to live there, assuming the traveller already has sufficient cash to get by during the first two months or so and knows the national language(s)?

If anyone has some URLs to give me, fine.

All information is greatly appreciated!

http://www.state.gov/

Is the State Department's Website.

They will have the info there.

One thing you need to do is go to a Walgreens or other photolab and get a set of Passport photos...then ther is usually a post office branch where you can fill out the paperwork (has to be done in person) and pay your money, then it takes like a month to get it.

There are ways to get it expedited if you are leaving the country sooner but they cost more money.

MrS

Is visa info there? Because I'm having trouble finding it. Actually, in case you were wondering and needed more information, it's for a long-term (over 100 days) visit to Japan.

If there is a Japanese Consulate in your city I would go visit them. I am sure they would be able to help you out. If there is not one, there must be a number somewhere for the Embassy in Washington regarding Visa applications.

Most countries have Visa applications and instructions on their websites these days.

I have two passports. I went to the American Embassy for both, one here in the US, one in Poland. MrS gave you a good link, go there.

Two 5.08 by 5.08 cm photos and form(s) of ID. Not every post office does it, either... That isn't much of a problem, though...
