Got EQ troubles?

Well look no further. I stumbled across this cool little plugin called a "FreeFilter". Forgive me if you already know about it but for those that don't, I'll explain what it does.

You take a song that you think is of the same style as yours and you run it through the free filter. It reads the frequency levels of the song (which is hopefully mastered properly by a pro or at least sounds well eq'd) really accurately. Then, you wack in your song and it reads teh frequency levels of your song. Then you hit the magical "match" button and it changes the eq of your song to match the eq of the pro song. I did it just then with one of my very slightly muddy tracks and ran it with one of my favourites and low and behold, it now sounds soo much better.

Better yet, for those who think you won't learn anything off it, it actually graphically shows you the eq changes that it made to your track so that you can see what changes need to be made to get a better sound in the future. I know that generally, my eq is always in the same (wrong) direction before I master so this is able to give me a better understanding of where it should be in the future.

Guys, THIS IS A MUST HAVE.

Well its not exactly free.

It's made by Steinberg, so you can get the demo here. I don't know what the demo is like though cos I have the full version.

Its a DX plugin. You open it in a wave editor like Sound forge, cool edit, Wave Lab, etc. Put the .dll is the VST plugin folder if you have one. If not, stick it in where all your other plugins are.

To get the volume up, go to Processes --> Normalise. Click "scan Levels", tick "use current scan level" and then normalise to about -0.5 or so. Normalising should be the last process though as eq and stuff can raise the level.

As for using the Mastering, I wouldn't really worry about it too much at the moment. The most important thing to do is to get the mix right. Get the individual eq and levels on and mastering is quite simple. There is a good article in here about mastering in its simplest form. Have a read.

Load in a track that has a similar feel to yours (i.e. similar style of trance) and go to one of the DirectX drop menus. Find ME FreeFilter. Click on Learn and Source, hit preview, wait till it says "source learned" at the top. Hit okay. Then load in your track, open ME FreeFilter, hit Learn Dest. Wait till it says source and dest. learned. The click match and move the morph bar so that your song sounds better.

thanks for ur help cheggy. verry usefull. but one thing, ive figured out how to use the free filter plugin, but there is one problem, it just never says source learned, how long do u have to leave it? i left it the whole duration of Aalto - rush (spuer 8 remix) and it still didnt learn it. and its a 7 minuete song.

am i doing something wrong? it is learning it because all the red lines move (im fidning this hard to explain) so i know its working but it just wont learn it fully. any advice?

I don't know. I just hilight a section of the main part of the song and use it on that section so you get all the synths going. I've only had this for 2 days though.
