buying stuff from abroad (FOR UK PEEPS)

not quite production related..help appreciated..If I buy something in a private sale from an ec country e.g Germany, do I get hit with extra costs when it arrives? VAT ect? finding it difficult to get an answer, quite suprising in our global times..

You will have to pay tax as it is a purchase.

It isn't always the full 17.5%, if in doubt talk to HM Customs and Excise... http://www.hmce.gov.uk/

If you know someone in the country you are buying it from then get them to buy it and post it to you as a present, that avoids you having to pay tax.

You could also do thi on a private sale... just get the seller to wrap it in nice birthday paper for you and state it is a pressie!!!
