Sony to Release Hi-MD Format, 1GB discs, hold music AND data

Wow...this could be a really cool format. Massive play time on the disc - 8 hours plus, in very good quality, and as always, great battery life (60+ hrs). You will also be able to drag and drop data files via USB.

You WILL be able to upload audio, and record at full stereo PCM CD-quality sound.

Check out minidisc.org

well that sounds more like it, instead of "we've took out some of the frequencies that you don't hear from a cd" = CRAP (that's what the distributor of sony said when they were showing it on a tv thing here in guatemala)

EDIT: BY THE WAY, THE BADGER SONG ROCKS
BADGERS BADGERS BADGERS BADGERS BADGERS BADGERS BADGERS BADGERS

Haha...yeah. Done right, Sony's ATRAC can be better than mp3, but still slices stuff out of CD audio. The new ATRAC formats are much improved over what they used to be, and the MD players are pretty advanced, using digital headphone amps now.

The pure PCM recording interests me the most, especially since Sony will allow you to transfer it digitally back to the computer. We're talking really high quality personal recording now. "Prosumer" level.

And it looks like Sony will be releasing a whole bunch of new products based on the new 1GB Minidisc. They're showing Hi-MD digital cameras and video recorders at the Las Vegas CES this week.

interesting... very interesting.

a competitor to the Ipod Mini, well, sorta.
those MD players are probably gonna cost as much as a 15gb Ipod. hmmm what would you choose. Ipod for me thankyouverymuch.

note: im not against MD, i have one. but the top of the line players are always HUGELY expensive.

Retail prices are out on the first-gen Sony one: $200 for the basic, $250 for the basic with AM/FM/Weather/TV radio, $400 for the one with wired remote. The new discs will go from $5-7 initially.

I'm waiting on the new iPod too. I think it could be a nice piece of hardware. But this is something for me to think about, since I do like/want/need the ability to record once in a while.

i have a minidisk player and i use it all the time....far from usless. I got a mic so i can bring it to clubnights and record dj sets. My buddy recorded steve lawler when he was last here and the recording turned out awsome. I also do audio post production for film at school and i use my player & Mic to record almost all of my foley for the animations I do.

my biggest problem with MD players was the fact that you can not dump audio that you recorded right on to your PC. So for example If I record 2 hours of a DJ set i hear in a club to get that onto my PC, i need to use a program like sound forge or protools and record that set REAL TIME to my PC, which obviously would takes 2 hours. I asked the sony guys about why they did this and that gave me some reason to do with copyright protection. The thing that pissed me off about it is when I went out and recorded a couple hours of ambiance for a film I then need to sit for 2 hours in the studio recording it to the computer before i can cut it up and bring it into protools. It looks like they realized how fucking retarded this limitation is and they say the ne md players wont have it. YAY!!

WoW I'm amazed, another great marketing ploy for the MD. When I was working for Sony, there were promising us a 1GB MS by the end of 2002. It was proposed at a 2001 COMDEX and never happened. But those little purple memory sticks are kinda cool, I washed mine and it still works.

I still have my first gen MD player and love it cause it still has all the inputs I like. I can record real time, from out my mixer, straight to the MD. The new PC Link format and Sonic Stage is crap, a terrible idea. I will never by the NetMD. And the AT3 format is still lacking those frequencies my brain desires.
