For some reason, my CD drive is not recognizing CDs that I put in (i.e. the CD doesn't play). Anyone know what I can do? I'm not getting any error message, it's just that it won't start playing a CD. Plus if I look at the drive itself it doesn't show that it's there.

Are you putting it in a CD-ROM drive? I know that if I put a CD-R in my old 1999 DVD-ROM drive it doesn't reconize it.
I have both a CD and DVD rom drive. I thought that too w/ the CD, but I put Magik 4 in and nothing happened either.
By the way, if it helps, I'm running on Windows 98.

Ok, somehow I got the CD-ROM drive to recognize the CD. However, when I play it, no music is coming out (it's mute). I put the volume controls for everything the highest possible, but nothing's working.

i had both of these problems
go to hardware manager
right click your CD rom drive
select properties
go to the properties tab
check "enable digital cd audio for this device" box if there is one.
***EDIT* RESTART!!!
another problem is my CD ROM doesn't recognize any CDs if i don't boot with a CD in the drive, then it seems to take any CD and not bitch about it.

Whiskers might be right, but if the box is greyed out, you might not have digital audio at all on it... so...
Have you tried plugging earphones into the CD-ROM drive to see if you get sound that way?
I think what's most likely the case is that the CD-ROM drive isn't connected internally to your sound card, so you can't get sound externally. If that's the case, then you need to open up the case and run an audio connector between the two.

Turns out that is what's happening. I plugged a pair of headphones into the jack on the CD-ROM drive itself and I hear it playing.
But, I've been able to play the CD on my PC (with the music coming from the PC speakers) before. Could the cable between the drive and the sound card have gotten disconnected somehow? I haven't touched the insides of my PC for awhile, so I don't know how last week I could play a CD with the PC speakers, yet today I couldn't.
