First hardware to buy?

I've been producing for about a year and a half now, using Reason, Cubase and various vst plugins. I have a good midi keyboard, a decent soundcard and nice speakers. I've been thinking about getting some CHEAP (did you notice I said cheap?? ) hardware synths or samplers, but I don't know where to start.

I'm a student and I don't have a job because of school and thus I have VERY limited money.
The main reason for buying hardware synths is the "hands-on" feeling you get and also to broaden the horizon, try something new and advancing to the next level I'm thinking about buying 1-2 synths in the lowest price range (200-400$, I know, that's really cheap . I'd prefer rackmount synths to begin with.

So what do ya'll say?? Is the E-mu Xtreme Lead a good idea?? (I know it runs for about 300$ on ebay).

you just made a contradiction..
you want hands-on interface and you want a rack-synth?
check out ebay for synths in your price range tho I doubt you'll find one that is worth the name synth (not talking about very small grooveboxes like the electribe's er-ea)

I know pretty much nothing about hardware, but my understanding is that there's a lot of VST instruments that are superior or just as good as some of the lower end synths, and that if you're going to be investing in hardware you should save up for something that you can't get elsewhere.

The only hardware I personally own is a midi keyboard which I consider to be invaluable. If I buy anything hardware wise in the next bit it will probably be a cheap protools system as I really want to play around with it. My next purchase is definitely Spectrasonics Trilogy though.

200-400 is really slim however, i would checkout this site.. http://www.vengeance-music.de/Virus2/eng/sounds.html they provide soundbanks for hard/soft synths.. and listen to the lower priced synths on there, like waldorf micro q, yamaha stuff... and then goto ebay see if you can find those modules. ive seen a micro-q on ebay before for around 300.. and it has pretty nice sounds.. so basically ebay would be the best option right now... Oh found one with 3 days left.. however it is the rack, so no knobs.. but anyways heres the site...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...&category=29552

just make sure whatever synth your getting has good online communities, or websites so you can learn the synth and take full advantage.. or just save your money
anyways good luck!
