Smiley DJ Paul Van Dyk - Reflections

Ok, this topic has been floating around in many threads and I feel its time to conduct a poll on everyone's opinion. What do you think of PvD's latest album Reflections, HOT, OR NOT. Those who participate in the poll please discuss your opinion.

I will be quite honest, I didn't expect this album to be as experimental as PvD rendered it to be. But, after listening to the whole album just once, I felt that his use of organic textures, strong melodies, consistant vision with in each song, bang on, great album, and I commend PvD on releasing an experimental album which still pushed the boundaries of the genre.

Ok, now your turn to discuss....

I say not

I tried to get into it...I work as RPM Director for my college radio station, so I have to try to get into anything and everything. But nothing really grabbed my attention. I already knew Nothing But You was gold (THE ORIGINAL WIX...WOO!) and although connected and crush are decent, nothing else grabbed me...
In fact, every time I hear Like a Friend I just cringe.

My oppinion as usual...and yes, this topic has garnished heavy discussion already

Agreed. He should've put his club version of Time Of Our Lives track on the CD, at least. I mean, compared to his older stuff like the legendary Out There And Back album, this CD is totally terrible! Disappointment is just an understatement!

Yes, well PvD took a completely different approach with Out there and Back. I still think Reflections is a fresh and well produced album with a plethora of sounds which PvD explored better than any other artist could do, but thats jus my opinion...

Sellout? hmmmmmm, thats very bold, I could say the same thing about Ferry Corsten, but thats another thread all together. Id say PvD's sets at his party's would deem your statement invalid

Well PvD didn't sell out for this one reason.....and you can see it on many other websites and articles too, he needed to take a break from all the hype, thus he started experimenting with a lot more loungey sound. Selling out no, making an experiment marketable, yes. Something which breaks, and hip hop have been failing to do with in the past year or two. Nothing wrong with breaks and hip hop, its just marketed poorly in my opinion, could be ALOT better. Thats another thread tho....

As far as the demise of trance goes, I highly doubt that. Too many artists, and more instrumentation is being implemented which shows that it will endure much ahead. I think many TA users will agree with me too. But thats not what this thread is about.

I thoguht the whole board already reached the consensus that Reflections album is really shit. only the three single tracks are interesting and worth a listen. And yes, PvD can do better than this. This album is very disappointing.

I totally agree with you. I did not listen to this album expecting awesome trance tracks to come out of it. I listened to it expecting a variety of tracks and I believe PvD did a great job of taking his music to another level. He did something not all artists are brave enough to do. This is just my opinion though.
