Hmm, this looks very nice. Don't know how it works in real life, but it seems wellpacked and it's quite cheap also.

It's a portable soundcard, fitted in a mixing console with all the usual mixer functions. Hercules is very well known for thei nice soundcards, but this was a new thing from them. Wonder if I should pick this baby up, as I can't afford the real deal (read CD/Vinyl), and still want to have fun mixing music.

It looks nice, but honestly, that's kiddie stuff.
Get the real thing... of course it's expensive, but get a job or save some money, even if it takes a year... and you'll love your setup even better than your girl

What's so worng with this anyway? Seems like folks are way to conservative about equipment for DJ'ing. Technology evolves, the same should DJ'ing.

This is something I never got, DJ's as a whole seem to be very anti-cd player, anti-compter driven, anti-anything-non-viynl. I personally thing you should use whatever tool you want to, the important part is how the crowd feels in the end.

Agreed, I'm not against CD's or Final Scratch or any tool like that, but that Hercules thing looks like a piece of shit that would fall apart in five minutes. In other words, a complete waste of money.

Aye, very true. But... The thing is with vinyl the crowd will technically feel better because of broken vs unbroken waveform stuff (See CD vs Vinyl thread).
While I'm not against the use of CDs I still think that vinyl is better in my opinion. If nothing else just more fun. Admittedly only personal opinion.

The main reason why a lot of DJs are anti computer/MP3 is because it takes some of the skill out of it. Not the DJing itself but the hunting down of the tracks.

I also feel that the industry that makes these products (With the exception of Final Scratch) do not fully understand the dance music industry.
I don't want a machine for example that helps me do scratching.. I really want to do it myself. I don't want to loop instead of back queing. Not because I don't like the effect but because I am capable of producing those effects without machines etc.

I can see the sense of someone who wants to start DJing but can't afford it wanting to get it, but I would still say not to. You are better off getting the real thing if DJ is what you really want to do.

They did give this to a couple of big name DJs to review and their words were something along the lines of 'it will do nicely for a house party with your friends but has no place in a club environment'.

In principle though it's a damn good idea.

I can agree with what you say for the most part but I think that the skill for hunting out good music is slowly being killed anyway, even with the viynl DJ's. These days there are 100's of msg boards out there with everyone and their dog talking about tracks they love or what headliner played what tracks. Really, someone just needs to frequent those boards and pay attention and they could build themselves a nice set list (even on thats not all athems). I really believe that in the future more attention will be paid to people like James Zabiela (? on spelling, its to early) who are doing more interesting things then beat mixing for extended lenghts of time.

Maybe its jsut me...

Hey man, i'm not against technology at all, i'm a computer science student, i have cdj's and would love to have final scratch (if only i could afford a portable..).

I just think that's a waste of good money... Well, if you want that just for playing at home, or at a friend's house maybe it does the job.
But remember, if you get bitten by the "dj-bug", you'll look back and think those $250 would had been better spent on some records... or as half a turntable

Perhaps, but I have to admit that on the whole most of the stuff I see on the msg boards is actually by dance music standards quite old or over priced. But I don't know if I would agree that it's 'killing' the skill. I would say it's just adding another method which is on the most part used by those who are at a slight disadvantage by geographical location.

It has to be said that James Zabiella (Not sure of the spelling either) is without doubt an interesting DJ. And you may well be right.
Although I have to say that there is a whole ton of other DJs who do much more than just beatmatch for long periods of time, both on CD and Vinyl. Pretty sure you knew that anyway.

All right. My intention was only to have fun with this, not to go to the local club with this thingy hanging round my neck and ask them to let me "spin"

Vinyl DJ equipment costs a huge amount of money here in Norway, around 1200 euro for a decent kit (seems like the only decent is Technics anyway so :P). And that's just for the kit. All the records must be inmported from the Uk or something, which again costs money. So for a student I felt that fooling around with MP3 mixing was a lot more satisfying. "The real deal" is just to damn expensive. This little thingy is not expensive, and it fits my small needs Dunno if I will buy it though.

Whoops... sorry dude. I sometimes get so carried away.

I guess it could give you the fundamentals of DJing and also give you a good idea if you wanted to get into it further.

The reports I have heard about it are that it's more in the lines of a toy than a mixing tool.
You may want to take a look at Traktor though if you are serious about mixing a little with your PC.
Traktor can be used without Final Scratch and is probably one of the better MP3 mixing tools available. It may still not give you the full picture of what it's like to DJ but I think it may be the better option.

I will buy this thing tomorrow... I tested it yesterday and I found that it was more than a kiddy tool.

BUT....

I will be using it for mixing retro songs (like YMCA, ABBA,... u know ) because I got to mix at some "boring" parties where "old" people doesnt specially like trance, techno,....

I will also try to use it as a cdj for some tracks that I never found on vinyl, I will keep you informed with my feelings with this thingy
