im' still a beginner at mixing but honestly it just soudns like ur fading out the volume of one track and fading in the next one. there doesn't seem to be any sort of beatmatching at all.

I'd evaluate that on a case by case basis; it's not a hard-and-fast rule. They obviously should sound good together, so why not? You're looking for consistency in theme or style when you mix two tracks...
Are you going to tell me that Adam Freeland's Essential Mix was flawed because of back to back DJ Shadow tracks?

sorry, haven't listened to it but...tracks by the same artist back to back might not be a bad thing, but in this case, too many pvd anthems back to back, when you're not pvd, is just kinda unoriginal i think. you can emulate pvd's style if you want, but playing his most popular songs in a row only works if you're pvd i think...just my 2 cents.
