These things are really nifty, I watched chris liebing using this on friday and it gives out some really quality effects.

I would definately consider buying one.

my view on these things is that yer they are well cool and i would totaly consider getting one BUT....

there are limited effects on it (cant remember how many) and im sure it wouldnt be too long before my short atention span made me get bored. i really hope they make the next gen of these style things with a way of hooking it up to a pc and putting on ur own effects.

unless they already have coz i know they have done it with some other (more expensive) things

My opinion of FX in sets isn't very high.

I don't have an FX unit built into my mixer (aside from Behringers pathetic "3D" sound knob), and I can't say that I've really missed it all that much.

That said, I tried out the Alesis AirFX at a local shop a few months back, and I pretty much thought it sucked...

I bought one cheap on E-Bay a few weeks ago. I haven't had a lot of chance to use it/play with it, but here are my thoughts:

It offers 50 effects. Some good, some not. The XYZ axis control for each effect (ie. moving your hand up and down vs. side to side, vs. forward to back) makes it pretty hard to ever replicate a sound or effect that you like. That means it would be hard to use live, i think... I use one effect and love it, try it again and move my hand lsightly differently and it suckc.

It's fun to play with. My buddies all take turns fooling around with it... but not very practical.

The input/output (stereo RCA) don't work for me. I output from my mixer to my (powered) speakers and sub using a balanced XLR cable. This means I can only connect the effects to one deck... (ie. out of the deck, into the effect box then into the mixer) OR buy a preamp to allow for both decks to flow through it. (course there might be another way... but I haven't figured that out yet. If I loved it, I might do that, but otherwise I can only use it half the time.

That's it.

I know some people with the same opinion as you, but i can't understand why you think that way.

For me, FX are indispensable. Of course, it isn't easy to master them and they suck if overused, but if you get them in the right time and depth, they add a whole new dimension to the mix.

Besides, with a FX unit like the Pioneer EFX-500, with equalizer, you can create your own breakdowns - which is, in my opinion, one of the "ultimate" dj skills.
