For the change, I would probably suggest a long sustained note on the pad playing, with some sort of short 1-bar riff of some sort (try and develop something that you have used elsewhere in the track i.e. notes used, patterns etc). Thats what I do anyway.
A lot of people on TA had advised me to add percussion to thicken my mix up, which can help, but I think on this occasion, you need a couple of sub melodys. Play about with your keyboard/piano roll with a loop of your track playing. Really helps me. When you get an idea, whack it down on the piano roll (no midi keyboard at the moment, but very soon, very very excited).
I just feel the lead needs to be hitting some higher frequencies, with maybe a tride-cordal stacatto rhythm. Might be confusing you there, but its basically an arp of three notes going to a particular rhythm, staccato rhythm
