Mauro Picotto - Code Breaker (Nemesis Project Remix)

Hi folks.. thought I would test my latest offering on you guys.
Been working for a little while now on this and just seemed to run out of steam. Any input or suggestions from you guys would be great.

Click on the red text below:
Mauro Picotto - Code Breaker (Nemesis Project Remix)

The percussion is Mauro's (so it's going to be good)the rest is mine (no guarantees there...).

Let me know what you think good or bad.

Cheers
Nem

It's a bit standard I think. But I like it.
Keep us posted.

Thanks for taking the time to listen Venesta,

Yup, it needs a lot of work in terms of rolls and stuff too. I'm still a little stuck for what to do with it but doing a lot of brainstorming at the moment.

cheers
Nem

Just listening now Nemesis,

I like the lead very much, it's nice, not too many effects and the reverb is pretty sweet on it. It's good.

Open hi hat seems to clash with some low end stuff like the bass or the bassdrum - the bassdrum doesn't seem to kick through it enough. In fact, neither does the clap - maybe look into the EQ for the hat? Hard to know what else to comment on cos my ears keep getting drawn back to it.

I do like the lead though cos I'm struggling to make a decent lead on my Vaz 2010 and getting not very far - too resonatey/whiney or just plain loud so I like the way in this it sits so well in the mix.

Good stuff!

Thanks for listening.

Sadly Mauro couldn't be here tonight to change the bits from his track as I did actually sample the drum loop.
I will however actually take what you said on board and see what I can do with it as you may well have a point.

In case you are interested the lead I am using is from the FM7. What I do is get the Eurosynth preset and detune it to 64 and set unison voices on about 4 to 6... depending on the track I'm doing.
I then mess around with the panning and put some effects such as delay and Fruity Stereo enhancer. I also sometimes EQ to take away the low end frequencies to get that really nasty shreeking style lead. Admittedly didn't do to much of that in this track but it sounds nice.

Cheers
Nem

I've seen your replies around most of the threads that never get checked out, so I wanted to check out the song.

Percs are great, and the synth leads are sharp. It's great to hear your stuff man, cuz I was wonderin what it sounded like! Keep up the work!

Hey Nem,

I just finished listening to your remix. I think it sounds real good. Real kick ass. It has a lot of potential. Just some minor scruples at this point: Now that BassAngel pointed it out, the hihat does seem to clash, it sounds like the volume of it is increasing and decreasing, just slightly. However, I disagree with BassAngel; I think the clap is great the way it is. Sometimes, IMO, a clap that gets lost in the song is very effective b/c after a while you hardly "hear" the clap, but you know it is there. I hope that makes sense to you.

As for input in song structure, I think you could make one kick ass build up if after the 2 minute marker of this demo here you break everything down again except for the kick and percs bass - pretty much except for everything you start off with at the beginning of the song (except for the hihat). During this reduction, muffle the kick, bass and percs so much that they almost mesh into one bassy sound... slowly bring it up again, teasing the crowd with anticipation of something huge. For a reduction of almost the entire song like Im thinking of, look towards F. Massif - Understatement or Tiesto - Obsession (Frank Biazzi remix). Something similar but not exact, something that fits what you got! IMO we need more songs like this.

I like it a lot though, Nem. This remix could really heat things up on the floor.

Almost forgot, see what you can get by adding a ride.

Tight production

At 2:30 in increse the vol of the lead riff a tad when everything else is in- gets a bit lost

If it was mine id just have a mad ass breakdown in- think chemical bros.- setting sun.....then kick it back in nice and hard

To make it really pump and mega tight, try splitting the hats and putting the extra feed in a sidechain on the compressor over the whole mix, with a medium (ish) attack and release... will make the whole track pump along with the hats

{EDIT}- ive just realised you are probably using software synths and outboard- which makes the above suggestion useless- i dont use software stuff- hardware all the way baby- hence my suggestion

Thanks for the tip Nem, that'll be pulled apart this evening when I sit back down in front of old Gertrude.

Man, this is the best, reviews that really get into the nitty gritty of the sounds. This is the stuff we all learn from! Let us know if you tweak it at all dude, be cool to listen to it again.

I'll download it at lunchtime at work and put it on and see if it sounds different and I can get the feel more, I was on surgery mode last night.

Thanks for the reviews guys.

Yup Freak, would love to work with hardware but at the moment it has to be software. Actually have plans on building a studio and I have my heart is set on some pretty cool gear too... All in good time. Just need to find a quiet post office somewhere...

I would be interested in a slightly more indepth explaination about the hi hats though. I do have the option to send and recieve effects separately so can split channels and so on with all sorts of weird and whacky stuff. If nothing else I may be able to acheive something similar. If I can grasp the principle.

The thing with this track is that the drum loop is Mauro's 'Code Breaker' so there isn't too much I can do with it. Naturally I have added bits which could be picked up on. For those that haven't heard the original, it's quite a minimal hoovers type of track.

Once again thanks for listening.

Cheers
Nem

It's actually originally a Techno style track from the Alchemist EP. I kind of made it trancy again.
Code breaker came out last year and was the B-Side to New time New place. I played this a lot last year, perhaps you should check it out. They have it on www.chemical-records.co.uk if you are interested.

Thanks for listening.

Cheers
