Soundproofing basement

Hey all, I want an insexpensive method to soundproof my basement so I don't bother neighbors/roommates/police, etc. Any suggestions? I was gonna do egg crate stuff, but then I thought about the fire hazard. Dont want flame anywhere near my wax. Suggestions?

You can put regular thermal fiberglass insulation in the basement ceiling and walls and that works. Cheap too, the acoustic insulation is better no doubt but probably more expensive.

That is what a friend did when he put a "home theatre" room in the basement. He could crank up the movie sound and it was almost inaudible right above the TV theater room.

Im mostly worried about cops busting up parties or even practices. The cops here at Rutgers have a bug up their ass about noise. My friends were having a trance party, pumping it pretty loud in the basement, they came to the house with 8 cops, the same amount of people as we had in the basement. Just a small gathering. Shits ridiculous. They'd much sooner bust up a party than catch a rapist. My friend got a $500 fine and no warning.

I am doing this in my basement right now. I am only soundproofing the ceiling. I have a drop ceiling with tiles. Pulled all of them down. I bought a staple gun and the key....

R30 Fiberglass Insulation.

It is about $33 a pack at the Home Depot. I forget what the coverage is but its 16" wide so it should fit perfect in between the joists.

Do not get a lower rated insulation because it will not do the job right.

definately. bass needs to be absorbed by something and R30 insullation will do just that. its thick enough to absorb quite a bit.

the guy at home depot said that any time someone comes in for soundfroofing, thats what he gives them. it sayss right on the packaging of the insullation thats its made for soundproofing. and not just to muffle the dog walking on hardwood.

ideally if you could use 5/8 sheetrock over the r30 insullation you wouldnt hear a peep. but most people cant sheetrock their basement ceilings.

Been there, done that... Large sheetrock sections + small space = lots of pain.
