I use concords and I will have to say there is absolutly nothing in the shape that makes them any better. I will admit that one reason I got them was they are so easy to set up, just stick them in the tonearm and go!

whats a normal needle?

I've used crappy ones that came with the decks....

I've used concordes...

and I use shure m44-7's now.

concordes are freakin expensive, but they are one of the best imo. If i did have the money I would defintely buy em.

but the shure needles sound good and are a lot cheaper. So I will stick with them until I win the lotto.

Hell ya, it makes a difference. Concords almost never skip (when they are set up properly of course). They don't damage the vinyl that much that cheap needles.

There are 2 simple reasons why I use OMs over the Concorde...improved tracking from the extra weight and superior sound. I welcome the extra weight.

The only reason to get the Concordes is if you can't mount the headshells which I feel should be the skill of any DJ regardless of genre.

Anyone know what needles have the best output/sound quality? I am about to start the process of converting all my vinyl to CD and I am thinking about investing in one really good cartidge just to use for this process since I want the highest quality possible.

I used the Ortofon concorde Gold Ellipticals to record some of my vinyl and it sounded better (fidelity-wise) than my Ortofon Concorde Nightclub Sphericals.

For fidelity, I would suggest an elliptical needle-tip.... Otherwise, for DJ'ing, probably get sphericals (or conicals).

If you're going for straight sound quality you might want to check out Grado's DJ line - http://www.gradolabs.com/product_pages/dj_cart.htm. I've heard that they sound really good, but are quite fragile and it's hard to see the actual needle so they aren't recommended for DJing despite what their name implies.

you work at Sun? guess you are lucky to still have your job (j/k). I worked there as an intern back in 99 (during the "good times").

Anyway - the Golds are a little too expensive for me, so I am thinking about getting a Ortofon Concorde Night Club E. The best price I have found online is $140.

Anyone know of anywhere that might be cheaper?

send DJTranz a PM and ask him, he works at DJ Mart and should be able to get you a good deal on one.

The ellipitcal needles should only be used for recording. They wear out your records faster than the spherical type.
