A place to get mental help?

Ok, not too long ago, I was trying to cut my wrists, as I felt my life sucked. My GF managed to talk me out of it though. She told me to get help. Does anyone know anywhere?

Call your doctor, I'm sure he can refer you to a therapist.

Am I correct, then, in the assumption that you no longer feel this way? If so, I'm not sure what benefit "help" could be, as the impetus to end your life seems to be removed.

Otherwise, what you need to do is ask yourself what you don't like about your life, and then change it. Don't make excuses, or pretend that it's beyond your control. Just go out, be assertive, and change it. It never ceases to amaze me how many people complain about their lives when it is completely within their power to change their lives. You need to seize control, and stop letting your preconceptions get in the way of your objectives.

"Getting help" is a real trend nowadays, but like so many forms of pseudoscience, psychology is really just a waste of time and money. You don't need help to solve your problems, and when people tell you that you do, it's just making things worse.

thats laughable at best.

while I am a firm believer in what you say, it only applies to a few people. Some are not ready to help themselves they need others to guide.

and the thought that a profesional is helping them may create the greatest placebo effect of all. while you do pay out some cash for it, the end result is nice, a happier life.

so don't discredit psychology for everyone. It does have it uses.

You think I can change the fact that I have Aspergers Disorder? I can't. I can't change the fact that I'm impaired when it comes to socialism.

My brother has Aspergers and he does just fine. There are plenty of people who live normal, happy, and productive lives with that condition. There's no reason you can't too - all you need to do is believe in yourself and to stop making excuses.

Yeah that's true. I actually tend to believe they all are capable of it, but it's a big obstacle you have to overcome. My brother used to go to therapy all the time when he was younger, and he finally started recovering from his depression after he quit. But different things work for different people.

I don't mean to tell this guy not to try talking to people, but you have to ask yourself if it's really helping or not after a few months, and if it's not, you shouldn't just go because "it's the thing to do." What most people who are depressed or have other psychological conditions seem to do is look for reinforcement that their life is as bad as they think it is, and as long as they stay in that frame of mind there isn't much that can be done to help them.

There isn't really much you can say to them to change it though, its a personal decision more than anything else. That's why I always try to encourage them to look within for support as much as possible. There's nothing wrong with getting a little help, but you don't want to become reliant on it either. The problem is that they usually don't want to hear it because they've already solidified themselves in the mindset of being helpless, and they're looking for the easy way out when they go to therapy or start taking some type of drugs.
