Anybody workout with a punching bag?

Hi guys,

Any of you regularly box, or use a heavy punching bag? I am thinking of buying one, to supplement my workout. The heavier the bag, the better, right? Also whats the deal on boxing gloves? I was trying them on, and the 16oz size felt ok, kinda tight. Should they be tight, or a little loose to allow for the hand wrap? Do I need those traditional boxing gloves or are those non padded ones better?

Any other info I should know?

Emil

Ive boxed for about 6 years. The heavier the bag isnt exactly the right one. Ive found a solid 100-120 lb bag is more than enough. Just hang it right. Dont use those stupid as water/sand bases that tip everywhere. Find a beam in your ceiling and bolt it in. Use two eye bolts and loop a chain through them. Then hang the bag from the chain and then use rope and duct tape to hold the chain in a single line. Trust me, ive ripped enough bags out of the ceiling to know that you need something SUBSTANTIAL to keep it in. Lots of force on that baby.

Use 6-8 oz Bag gloves. Enough to protect your knuckles, but still gets them tough. You then also learn how to stiffen your wrist and dont get so much shock absorbed though it all.

Great workout for cardio. It works everything from toes to head. Just do jabs, then crosses, then left crosses, then right hooks, then left hooks. Do like 40 of each before switching. Fun stuff like hitting as hard as you can with the right for 1 minute....its awesome.

For a speed bag just get a larger one. Youll use that for a year or so before you want smaller ones. Use bare hands. or tape your knuckles. The tag on the bottom of the bag made our wall look like a modern artpiece called "splattered blood".

Go for it! I wish my sister hadnt taken mine down and set up an Fing Scrapbooking table. Im still looking for a place to put it

and get a glove with a bar on the palm. Ever heard of people holding rolls of pennies when they go into fights? its so you dont break your knuckles on a bad punch. A good pair of gloves will fit snugly, but not uncomfortable, and will cost about 40 dollars.

Hi Orbax,

The 2 bags I am looking at are a 100lb and a 80lb bag. Are you sure you mean 6-8oz? I tried on a 14oz glove and it barely fight, the 16oz seemed like it was ok. You're talking about "traditional" boxing gloves right?

I have those. and I have 12, 8, and 6 oz gloves as well. They do come in different sizes for the hand dork lol. The oz is just how much padding. The size is going to be the interior space

i wish I could find mine, but these are what I started with. Mine have a foot long wrap that go around the wrist for extra support that are AWESOME. plus its seperated fingers that are cut off after second knuckle. I shall continue my search.
