What exaclty is a CUE file?

I was just wonderin what a CUE file is exactly, cause they post em all the time on TA. Im just not sure what there used for, help me out

I think you can burn them onto a cd with an mp3 file and it splits the track times automatically.

Iv'e never done it so im not 100% sure
