you used to be able to tell hard house from trance very easily, as hard house was supposed to be house music. as you say, now the lines are very blurred, most of what people call hard house isnt house music, but it isnt hard trance either. i put it in my own little frame of 'hard gash'.

hard house should be much bouncier than trance, have a house beat & structure, using samples and synths, in a very fast tempo. hard house should use a lot of darker sounds combined with big riffs that are much less intricate and detailed than those of trance. in a summary, hard house should sound cheap and cheerful, yet somehow wrong

if you want to tell the difference between hard house and hard trance, go listen to tony de vit - i dont care for an example of hard house, and anything produced by shokk for hard trance.

Hard house is much faster, heavier and kicks more. It has less of a melody than trance, and makes frequent use of effects like hoovers.

Hard house tends to sound a lot cheesier than trance IMO (hoovers anyone?) But yeah, what everybody else said is right...faster, more bass, more kicks, less synths, simpler sounds. Not really about melody as much as it is about speed.

It's getting to the point where a lot of DJs are turning out tracks that cross genres in one way or another. Whether or not you see that as a good thing is largely a matter of opinion, but as far as trance vs. hard house, hard house has a lot more bass in most cases. It's also got a sort of "start-stop, on-off" beat, whereas most trance out there today has more of a constant flow.

hard house used to be a respectable genre but as of late the scene has went down the drain...

i still enjoy hard house, and its progression towards a techy sound is good thing.
