The resulting power surge caused the reactor power to reach 20,000MW in about .01 seconds

Holy fuck!!!

quote:
"3 January 1961: A reactor explosion (attributed by a Nuclear Regulatory Commission source to sabotage) at the National Reactor Testing Station in Idaho Falls, Idaho, killed one navy technician and two army technicians, and released radioactivity "largely confined" (words of John A. McCone, Director of the Atomic Energy Commission) to the reactor building. The three men were killed as they moved fuel rods in a "routine" preparation for the reactor start-up. One technician was blown to the ceiling of the containment dome and impaled on a control rod. His body remained there until it was taken down six days later. The men were so heavily exposed to radiation that their hands had to be buried separately with other radioactive waste, and their bodies were interred in lead coffins."

Man, that's insane.

Ya, well, that's why it's called a controlled nuclear reaction. Once you remove the control rods, it's not controlled anymore, right? Keep in mind, though, that it's not a nuclear explosion that happens. When the control rods are removed, the water heats up tremendously and the H2O molecules split into hydrogen and oxygen. The oxygen then reacts with the uranium and forms U02 uranium oxide, and the resulting hydrogen explodes because of the heat.

It's no small explosion either... sent the whole pressure vessel 3 METERS into the air. Holy fuck...

As a matter of reference, an exposure of 1 mR gamma or x radiation results in a dose equivalent of approximately 1 mrem (with a small variation depending upon the energy and irradiation conditions).

Average Dose to US public from all sources 360 mrem/year

Even through the lead caskets the bodies were emitting 300 mR/hr....
