The Sorry State of Trance in Our Beloved NYC

Hey peeps, what's up. I've read and enjoyed these boards for a while, and I've decided to post now that I have something to say.

What's up with the sorry-ass state of trance here in our beloved NYC? I went to PVD's last set, and I have to say, I was quite disgusted. . .not because of the music, no sir, the source of my discomfort was THE LACK OF FEMALES ON THE DANCEFLOOR.

I mean seriously, fellas - are we NYC tranceheads running a giant gym class here? Almost the entire dancefloor of the Roxy was occupied by guys.

Let's face it - if we want trance to live and thrive in NYC (our dream since the 90s), we had better focus on getting more girls into these events, because while we may live for this music, it isn't 100% of the equation.

Just my two cents. . .and to pre-empt those who may try to hate on this thread, I say this:

A party can have the best setup and the best music, but without ample numbers of the opposite sex, it isn't really a party, is it?

For trance to thrive in NYC, it has to succeed during club nights - and success during club nights largely translates to women.

This is New York fuckin' City, the Capital of the World. . . we already have the best DJs coming in, and in my opinion, its up to the rest of us, as New Yorkers, to bring the party that will keep them here for years to come.

Peace,
Slick

Pyro, I'm not disputing Spirit (never been there myself), but here's some of my own observations:

~Fact:
Every big trance event I have gone to in the last two years has had about a 20:1 guy-to-girl ratio.

~Fact:
If a good crowd can't be present for the big jocks, a bona fide NYC trance scene never can and never will be a reality.

Seriously, I know the folks on this board can bear me out - there's been times at Roxy when I've seen chicks literally *chased* off the floor. There were so few of them in attendance that they were being set upon by huge packs of guys whenever they came within range of the dancefloor.

Peace,
Slick

ok there buddy chill it a tad will you ?

I don't live in the city and I'm there only on "rare" occasions. I never really thought there was a lack of females but to be honest I don't pay attention to the attendance... All I know is that roxy is famous for the huge lines at the girls's bathroom when there's headliners .... Maybe that's where they all are!

bonified? is that intentional? boner, bonified. har har. bona fide. and i'm always seeing the asian females out there at these things. i don't know what u're looking at. i'm not sure any of the TA guys would agree about being a pack of wolves whenever a girl's on the floor. i can't speak for everyone here, but i'm definitely there for the music first. girls come next but aren't necessary to having a good night (well maybe they are ).

Trunks, exactly - we attend for the music. . .that is why we are all here.

Let me clarify in saying that the music is the absolute first reason I go to these things. No DJ, no music = no party, no reason to come out. However, people in this thread are already getting heated as if I am hating on trance, when nothing could be farther than the truth.

I've been a trance fan for a while, and anyone else who has been can tell you the scene has taken a BIG downturn, especially after 2001. I don't know about you, but I remember events with crowds that blew PVD's last performance out of the water, not just in terms of guys and girls, but in terms of overall fun and energy. I mention girls because they happen to be a very important element that contributes to an awesome crowd.

This post is geared towards the NYC scene as a whole; despite my complaints, I've had some killer times whenever a trance jock comes to town, so why not build on that?

Not trying to sound pretentious, but if you think PVD's last event at Roxy is an example of a great trance event, well, it compares poorly to the rest of NYC non-trance events and the rest of the trance world. I love trance and I love the vibe it brings - and I would love to see that vibe realized in a more complete manner on the dancefloor.

That's my main message with this post - and I would appreciate it if we could have some constructive conversation on it instead of immediate rebukes. This is a discussion board for the trance community, right?

And lastly, if you go "just for the music", that's fine too - but there are some people who go out there for the whole package - and that includes hearing bangin' tracks while dancing with women.

It just so happens that that same situation brings money into clubs, which forms a following, which forms a scene. Just because I appreciate that sort of thing doesn't make me any less of a fan.

Again, it all goes back to the scene - and there isn't much of one in NYC aside from big-name events.

I consider them parties over music events.
sure the music is the backbone of the party, but dont forget your there to have a good time, to PARTY!
I dont stand in front of the DJ all night, i find that to be pointless and a waste, im out enjoying the atmosphere the DJ created.

Amen to that!

IMO, a dance event is about the whole experience - to me, a DJ is more than a vinyl jockey, he's a maestro who knows how to connect with a room and whip it into a frenzy!

Said frenzy is increased with an awesome crowd - reading the PVD review thread, I've seen more than a few posts that cite the dancing arrangements/lack thereof to be a sticking point.

I would say that an event the size of PVD@Roxy would be indicative to the state of trance in NYC today - hence my original post.

Peace,
Slick

I go to PVD to support him and enjoy his tracks by seeing him playing it.

If you wanna see more chicks go to a freaking Hip-Hop party, I am sure you gonna see a lot of girls over there...

Respect the Muzik,
Respect the DJ.

This is the attidue I don't understand. I just said in my previous post that chicks are not the #1 reason - this is tranceaddict.com, right?

You want to support PVD, that's fine. Personally speaking, I am not his #1 fan. . .but I am a big TRANCE fan - and I don't want to go to "freaking Hip-Hop parties". I want to go to trance parties.

WHAT ON EARTH can be wrong with wanting to hear THE BEST TRACKS of your FAVORITE MUSIC while dancing with girls? I think we can all agree that PVD, scruples aside, delivers on the music side.

And again, going back to the scene - crowds profit clubs and clubs bring in DJs - a crowd with more girls spends more money which enables that DJ to be booked more frequently. That's not the whole picture, but a damn good lot of it.

An attidue of "I like it the way it is" will guarantee that trance stays at its lowly state in NYC. IMO, trance only increased in visibility here due to the horrid state of Manhattan nightlife - clubs need acts to bring in heads, and therefore have more open booking preferences.

I don't know about you, but I could deal with more trance in NYC. It all starts on the dancefloor.
