That......'atmosphere'? with kicks etc.

Yes another 'how do I' thread, sorry guys.

Okay so Ive been told its not a good idea to put reverb on a kick, I used to put some only on the high's but Ive been recomended not to do that either.
Now my problem is that, when I compare my kick and general percussion to the intro part of a club mix my kick sounds really dry and right in front of me. (since it is right there in front of me, in my sequencer although its like this when I listen to it away from the sequencer).

Its really dead and with no atmosphere, unlike the Pro tracks.
is it all in my head?
My kicks are generaly punchy sounding and compressed tight, its just this sense of atmosphere Im not getting.
It just sounds like its from a sequencer, right there in front of me.
I dont get this sound from pro track.

God, how depressing do these threads sound

UGA BOOGA BOOGAH !!

aghh, I was hoping that description would do the trick

I dunno how Id show it, I could export one with high end reverb and one without but, the one 'with' isnt exactly how I want it to sound anyway.
I could show a clip from the track/s Im comparing to but you'd just here a normal beat from a track.
hummm, Ill try and show an example

Subtle delayed whooshes and atmospheric synth effects cover this sort of thing up remarkably well.

Kay, im gonna post this to save making a new thread.....

You know when you compress the drums and its sounds good yeah, all tight together.....

WHAT do you do when like, the hi hat is on its own or something because when the rest of the drums are gone there is nothing to kick in the compression and it goes reaaaaally loud:

thats easy,

only compress one channel? i do know that you should save the majority of your compression for the mastering studio though.

I normaly compress all the percussion again on a bus, its sounds like individual shit seperate.

Use a multi band compresor. This will let you compress the sub-bass, the bass, the mids and the highs all individually, so you can compress the shit out of the highs while leaving the low-end more free to do it's thing.
