It has been improved with their new S series, but with the DN series, I've had skipping problems each time I used them in a large venue (read, loud environment, vibrations). Once a complete dual deck just went out on me. I've played around with the S series, and had no problems yet, but haven't them used in a "hard" environment either.
I'm sort of old fashioned in that way. I don't want loads of features, I just want a deck that performs well (just like the SL1200). Pioneer hasn't given me any problems yet (their suspension systems still are the best up to date if you ask me).
There are enough cd players that play mp3's now. Although I strongly recommend against playing mp3's on a gig (you really hear the crapiness of mp3 on large PA). Well, don't know any other cd players that have alpha track, but surely one of those copycats (Gemini, American Audio, ...) has it already.
And independant pitch and tempo control has been on players for some time now. First that comes to mind is the Tascam CD-302 (that has had some problems in the past too, due to bad firmware updates).
